There are two movies showing at the moment based on books I have particularly enjoyed. I share below my thoughts – no spoilers. I confess to not having read either book recently so this is my remembered feelings around the books.
There are two movies showing at the moment based on books I have particularly enjoyed. I share below my thoughts – no spoilers. I confess to not having read either book recently so this is my remembered feelings around the books.
The first is Carol, by Patricia Highsmith.
Back then, I couldn’t get enough Patricia Highsmith, I loved her writing. This one was a particular favourite. It came out at a time when there was no lesbian culture available on the mainstream media. I devoured it and re-read it many times immersing myself in the world of Carol and Therese.
How the world has changed, now every television soap has a lesbian and we are fully integrated and accepted by society. Back then it was different, but Carol let me know I wasn’t alone. Next is Sunset Song, by Lewis Grassic Gibbon. This is the first part of A Scots Quair. (Followed by Cloud Howe and Grey Granite). Another book I could relate to, but for different reasons this time. I was brought up in the north-east of Scotland, from farming stock so it was easy for me to translate my grandparents into the characters in the book. My main memory from the book is the contrast between the hard farming life and the horrors of war and its aftermaths. Chris Guthrie. The heroine faces many battles, but somehow endures. I look forward to seeing both movies. I'm trying to decide whether to re-read the books again first. Thoughts welcome.
