Is it really possible to change your life? Of course it is. Richard Bandler asks, “Who is driving your bus?” So who is making the decisions in your life? Think about it, maybe it’s time for you to take charge. I see too many people who are very clear about what they don’t want in their life. They maybe hate their job, or are in a failing relationship that they can’t change or let go of, or any one of a million other things. Maybe they have gotten used to letting other people make decisions for them. Its easier to blame someone else if things don't work out.
But often they have no idea of what it is they actually want.
So, how do you move from what you don’t want to what you do want? NLP talks about ‘meta programs’ or filters which explore how people or organisation react to a given situation. They tend to be based on two extremes. While people are not often at one of these extremes, it does offer an opportunity to examine behaviour, get a better understanding of motivations and, most importantly, act to break the cycle.
One of these is the ‘away from/toward’. Toward people are always looking to the future, thinking about how they could make things work better. They tend to have lots of energy and are always pushing and striving toward a goal. On the other hand, away from thinkers are more cautious. They always see the risks, and spend a lot of time trying to fix problems. They can feel overwhelmed and often leave it to others to make decisions.
So if you are stuck in an ‘away from’ mindset, how do you change?
Well, having awareness of the pattern is a huge help in changing it. Once you are consciously aware of the thinking which is holding you back, it is easier to start doing something about it.
The key is to sit down and spend some time, thinking about what you do want, and set some goals. Get someone to help you at this stage, because you will always be tempted to slip back into old ways. Your subconscious mind will keep running its program, reminding you about what you need to escape from. So you may say, “I want out of this job.” Re-framing that it could become “I am in a job that I love, working with people I like and respect who like, respect and value me.” Sounds much better?
Spend as much time as you need on this stage, its important. That’s not to say you can’t change it as you grow, but this is the start of you changing your mindset and motivations. Setting goals is a powerful way to turn your dreams into plans then actions that will ensure you are able to change your life and achieve the success you are dreaming about.
Self improvement is in your hands if you are ready to make the change and drive your own bus.
