WHAT LIES WITHIN
Glasgow. Dundee. 1988.
She knows her brother wouldn’t abandon her.
But she is discovering how much she doesn’t know about him.
Eighteen-year-old Pat Devine has always relied on Tom. Since their parents died, her brother has been the centre of her world.
Then he disappears.
A strange parcel—a hollowed-out Bible and a key—leads Pat into a life he has kept hidden from her. The search takes her from Glasgow to a struggling Dundee jute mill, where Tom stands accused of stealing stock worth a hundred thousand pounds.
Ruth Martin offers a way into the mill and the warmth Pat badly needs. As attraction becomes attachment, finding her brother means navigating loyalties she cannot yet understand—and recognising what she would rather not see.
A psychological crime novel about family, desire and the choices we make for people we cannot bear to lose.
This substantially revised second edition was previously published as What Lies Within by Audrey Finch.

PAT DEVINE
Eighteen. Pink hair. University work she should probably be doing. Pat notices more than people expect, but reading other people is harder when her own feelings get involved.
TOM DEVINE
Pat’s brother, who took on responsibility for her far too young. He wants to keep her safe. Deciding what she needs to know is where things get complicated.
DAVIE MACKINTOSH
Tom’s business partner. Davie has an eye for an opportunity and a weakness for temptation. His judgement gets more exercise in other people’s affairs than his own.
